Legacies
While remembered fondly by many of its former players, and often their mothers and grandmothers who played before them, the IGHSAU’s decision to retire 6-on-6 basketball following the 1992-1993 season came at the urging of its current players. At the height of its popularity, 6-on-6 basketball provided girls in Iowa with important sport experiences not available to girls in many other states. However, as modified rules for girls lost support and 5-on-5 basketball opportunities grew, schools and players began turning away from the 6-player, half-court game. Gone, but not forgotten, the legacies of Iowa’s unique tradition of 6-on-6 girls’ basketball carry on through the shared stories of those who have played, coached, and watched girls’ sports in Iowa for over a century. What’s your story?
