Title A name given to the resource Julie Goodrich papers Subject The topic of the resource Adel, Iowa native who was an accomplished high school athlete in the 1970s. Biographical Note: Julie Goodrich was an accomplished high school athlete in the early 1970s from Adel, Iowa. She was actively involved in the fields of basketball, track and field, cross-country, and softball. In basketball, admittedly her favorite sport, she was a forward on the Adel Tigerettes girls' varsity team for four years, and her team's number two shooter. She received numerous awards from the Adel Community Schools and local sponsors, and was chosen to participate in the all-conference basketball team two years in a row. She was also an all-conference softball player and track star. Her name and picture frequently appeared in the Des Moines Register and Dallas County News, where she even received fan mail. The Dallas County News described her as "a very determined girl who doesn't know what it is to quit or give up." As testimony to this description, in 1973, her junior year, she was a pitcher on her softball team, a quarter-mile runner in track, and a forward on the basketball team, as well as being inducted into the National Honor Society, performing in shows as a tapdancer, and teaching swimming with the Red Cross. This was the year her basketball team made it to the Girls' State Tournament, where they came in second. When she returned from the Tournament, sick with measles and strep throat and afraid of missing out on the State Track and Field Championships, she told a Dallas County Reporter, "I gotta get going. I haven't been too hot this spring." Larry Niemeyer, her coach for both basketball and track, said that the track team's chances of winning the state title improved with Goodrich being there. She was appreciated by her teammates not only for her prowess, but for her unselfish team spirit. In an article Goodrich wrote, called "Adel Tigerettes Live a Dream Come True" (see Box 1, Scrapbooks, Photocopied, 1973 State Tournament), she recounts in the style of a fairy tale the history of her basketball team in 1972 and 1973, which culminates in their performance at the State Championship, then "living happily ever after." Description An account of the resource The Julie Goodrich papers measure 1.5 linear feet and date from 1948 to 1977. Most of the papers date from 1970 to 1974, when Goodrich was in high school. They are organized into six series: Scrapbooks, Personal, Photographs, Publicity, Family papers, and Iowa girls' sports. The papers document Goodrich's involvement with girls' sports in Iowa in the early 1970s. The Scrapbooks series (1969-1974) contains the nine scrapbooks that Goodrich kept while she was in junior high and high school, which form the bulk of the collection. Two of the scrapbooks were preserved in their original state. The other seven were photocopied and then disbound. The items removed from these scrapbooks were then arranged into series. In her scrapbooks she organized newspaper clippings, press releases, photographs, sports records and statistics, and correspondence relating primarily to her athletic activities. The photocopied scrapbooks dated 1970- 1971 and 1971-1972 are in their original covers, which are examples of common designs of the early 1970s. Goodrich kept two scrapbooks during her senior year, 1973-1974, both concerned with sports. The Personal series (1970-1974) contains the awards, correspondence, and memorabilia removed from the scrapbooks. The Photographs series (1970-1974) contains the photographs removed from the scrapbooks. Most of these date from 1973 and 1974. The Publicity series (1970-1974) contains the promotional and statistical material related to the sports events in which Goodrich participated. In this subseries is one 16mm film from Wolper/NBA Films that lasts several minutes and shows Goodrich playing basketball at the 1973 State Tournament. The Family papers series (1948) contains one memory book that Goodrich's mother kept during her last year in high school in Linden, Iowa. The Iowa girls sports series (1967-1977) contains all the programs and statistical booklets that Goodrich collected concerning games she did not participate in as an athlete. Biographical Note: Gwendolyn Johnson Hein, basketball player, seed store operator, and farm woman was born in 1911, one of four children of William and Emma Johnson of Newhall, Iowa. During her childhood, she spent weekends playing with siblings and neighboring friends, coasting, riding horses, and playing ball. As a teenager, she remembered "wearing out the carpet" with dancing," to her mother's piano playing or records. While attending Newhall High School, she took speech classes, took part in musicals and plays, and gave an oration at graduation. Along with her friend Luella Gardeman Boddicker, she joined the school basketball team that played a three-court game. After the 1924 state girls high school championship tournament, the Iowa High School Athletic Association announced they were eliminating the state tournament for girls basketball. Gwen Johnson and Luella Gardeman rode horses from farm to farm to convince neighbors to support the continuation of girls basketball tournaments. Before the next year, school officials founded the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union that sponsored the 1925 tournament. Newspaper accounts of Newhall's victory in the 1927 state tournament are located in the collection. Hein went to Coe College in Cedar Rapids for one year. While there, she played intramural basketball, softball, field hockey, and studied tap dancing. The financial crisis of the Depression ended her schooling. She married Hugo Hein in 1941 and they raised three children, Russ, Kay, and James on a farm. In 1965, Hugo and Gwen opened a seed dealership in Stanwood, Iowa that Hugo ran until his retirement. Title A name given to the resource Melba Gardemann Olson papers Subject The topic of the resource Benton County, Iowa, farm girl and teacher who played on her high school's basketball championship team in 1927. Biographical Note: Melba Gardemann was born to John and Clara Schlotterback Gardemann in South Dakota in 1909. In 1911, the family returned to Iowa by train. After moving twice, they settled on a farm near John Gardemann's parents, whose daughter Luella was close in age to Melba Gardemann and her brother Merle. Melba Gardemann spent her young womanhood cleaning, helping with washing, ironing, gardening, and raising poultry. She belonged to the Fremont Busy Bee 4-H Club of which her mother was a leader. She attended Newhall High School and made the basketball team as a sophomore. She and her two aunts, Luella Gardemann Boddicker and Marie Gardemann, played on the Newhall team. In their senior year, Melba and Luella Gardemann played in the 1927 girls' high school statebasketball tournament, winning the state championship for Newhall. The Des Moines Register chose Melba and Luella Gardemann as forwards for the All-Tournament team. Melba Gardemann graduated that year and was class salutatorian. Her parents sent her to Iowa State Teachers College, now the University of Northern Iowa, for the two-year, elementary school teacher's training course. She graduated in 1929 and taught in Whitten for four years, then in nearby Conrad. She taught the high school girls' physical education course in both towns. In May 1936, she married Merle Olson. Because teachers were dismissed upon marriage and jobs were scarce, Merle and Melba Olson kept their marriage a secret the first year so that she could continue teaching. She left her job before 1937 when their daughter Karen was born. A daughter Kaylene followed in 1943. Merle Olson operated a print shop, bought and sold the Benton County Star newspaper and finally the Dysart Reporter in 1945. Melba Olson edited its news page until 1954 when they bought an insurance agency in Dysart. They retired in 1972 and Melba Gardemann Olson died in 2000. Description An account of the resource The Melba Gardemann Olson papers date from 1916 to 1993 and measure 5 linear inches. They consist of the reminiscence "The Life Story of Melba Gardemann Olson," one scrapbook [disassembled], and two photograph albums. The donor assembled the donated scrapbook from items in other scrapbooks without any particular order. It has been disassembled for preservation purposes. Pages of the scrapbook containing photographs have been photocopied to show original order. The scrapbook contains primarily school records and programs from Olson's education and teaching career as well as many newspaper clippings concerning the 1927 high school girls' basketball championship game. The photograph albums include many pictures of Melba Gardemann and her school mates. These papers and photographs convey the camaraderie and excitement surrounding the 1927 Newhall girls' high school basketball team.
